Each English 9 student is required to read a novel of their CHOICE during the second semester. He or she will be required to complete the reading, do four projects that reflect the novel. and "test" over the novel with Ms. Cornelius. Students will be given Independent Reading time in class, but some may have to read outside of class in order to complete the reading and projects by their due date.
WHY "CHOICE" NOVEL?
Too often, students lose their love of reading when they are forced to read books that are of no interest to them. By allowing students to choose the books they read, my hope is that they will find joy in reading again. Choice Novels give students an opportunity to decide what they want to read and it gives them a chance to pick content that interests them. (i.e. sports, mystery, romance, science fiction, etc.)
CHOICE NOVEL READING JOURNAL
When you've completed your novel, you'll want to schedule your "test" with Ms. Cornelius as soon as possible. You MUST bring your book with you when it is time to test with Ms. Cornelius. She will flip through the book three times, read a selection to you, and you will be required to answer her questions & summarize the plot of the novel. She may ask questions about setting, plot, characters, etc. If she can tell you read... you get a 100%. Make sure you read your book thoroughly before testing with Ms. Cornelius.
CHOICE NOVEL PROJECTS
After finishing your novel, you must complete FOUR projects about your book. Students get to choose these projects from an approved list in the following link. If you have an idea for an alternative project not listed among the existing choices, please ask Ms. Cornelius for permission to explore this option. Click HERE for the project options.
WHAT DO I DO DURING INDEPENDENT READING WHEN I FINISH MY NOVEL?
Short answer: read another book. Regardless of how many books you read this year, you will continue to utilize the independent reading time in class throughout the entire school year.
